Somehow, October is a month of birthday celebrations. My son, some close family members and couple of friends had their moments as we partook in dinners galore. This indulgence included a first omakase experience for my children as I thought they are now old enough to learn a little more about culture and food connections, and of course have the stomach to trial plus finish the servings. Ikkoten pampered our palettes with 13 courses for a reasonable price. In a way, it was also in preparation for the month end trip to Hokkaido.
Before that occurred, I attended a wedding that brought back some memories as it was held in the same venue as mine. The reality is this probably was the last or close to last of such an occasion as not many of my generation remained unmarried. In hindsight, I would prefer to do an intimate gathering, make proper conversations and really enjoy the meal instead of being rushed to do so many things. But I am grateful as it taught me that life’s imperfections are part and parcel of the time we have.
Then, my sister held a party for her 5 year old with a number of her neighbors turning up with kids around that age. As I watched the young ones play and ran all over, it felt like a rewind back to when we used to do the same. Now, we simply stood on the sidelines, not having to deal with mini conflicts and just sip champagne. Oh, it was endless drinks for four hours without child minding duties.
As I write this, I’m in the midst of the Japan holiday with my wife and two younger sons. Eldest one couldn’t make it due to NS commitments. But I’ll save this story for next month.
